Prickle Press is a design and letterpress studio based in Brixton, London and founded by Rachel Stanners. Rachel trained and worked as a designer for dance and theatre while pursuing a hobby in letterpress. After successfully selling her first range of letterpress greetings cards to a small book shop in Copenhagen Rachel decided to establish Prickle Press as a limited company in 2010. Since then she has bought a much larger press, an American 8×12 Chandler & Price treadle press named ‘Gee Gee’ and developed a thriving bespoke business for clients including Manolo Blahnik and Vogue. See here for examples of her work.
Letterpress dates back to the fifteenth century. It is an old, tactile craft that requires time, focus and skill to design and typeset faultlessly, master the machinery and produce a perfect print. Each piece of card is fed through the press, piled, cut and enveloped by hand. The result is something you will instantly want to stroke, collect, frame or gift away.
Prickle Press also has it’s own range of stationery which sell online, at markets and to small and large UK retailers including the Tate Britain and Anthropologie EU. All the designs have been created by Rachel Stanners and start as pen, ink and watercolour sketches before being reproduced on high quality papers using both traditional letterpress and modern digital printing techniques. Her aim is to create beautiful, lively and tactile stationery that inspires and encourages the age-old tradition of putting pen to paper, sending letters, writing in journals, and gift giving.
Prickle Press is also excited to be collaborating with illustrator Katharine Cooke on a brand new range of children’s stationery called “Little Prickle”. Rachel and Katharine are cousins who spent their childhood summer holidays dreaming up projects together and letting their imaginations run free. Since becoming mothers they have been inspired to pool their talents once again and create a stationery range for children that captures the spirit of fun and creativity they remember from their own childhoods. Take a look at the stationery range here.
The Prickle Press family is small so we would love you to join in and share your love of snail mail and all things paper and letterpress. You can start by signing up for our newsletter, buying a card for a long lost friend or having some stationery made just for you.
